One of the great epics. Demille pulled out all the stops in 1956 and it’s just as grand, just as marvelous now as it was then. I grew up watching this and every scene was seared into memory not because of all my viewings but because of how memorable it is.The conversations are larger than life with amazing zingers. Heston in general is not considered good but I love him as Moses. He has a gravitas with his forced delivery and his transformation after the burning bush is compelling.This makes me long for more bible stories told on a scale like this. It’s amazing how well crafted it is, staying true to the Bible but filling in the gaps where it needs to. This film managed to bowl me over and knock my sandals clean off with how entertaining I found a story I had been told hundreds of times growing up. So many amazing lines throughout, and I could not get over the mind boggling amount of extras used in this to make the set feel so alive. I bought this film twice because my disc 2 Blu-ray didn’t work (got the 4k instead) and I still feel like I underpaid for this masterpiece.

This is actually better than I remember it being... it’s a re-watch for me because I went to a Chtistian school, and this flick was slapped on more than once in religion class through the years... but pretty boring for young kids.  As an adult, I enjoyed the story and the drama of it a lot more. I almost wasn’t gonna re-watch it, but I was curious...and when I saw that Vincent Price had a part in it, I couldn’t restist. Lily Munster is in it too! She plays Sephora, Moses’ wife. “The Ten Commandments” is indeed an epic film...a huge and grandiose production. Considering the scope of things, it’s nutty that the thing got made. As a grown-up, I found it entertaining, but I think we should stop making grade-school-age kids sit through it. That is sinful. 😉  So it is written, so shall it be.

I remember seeing this for the first time as a child when it played on broadcast television, interruption free, and felt like it went on all night. But to this day so many scenes are seared into my head.The bad first: Heston is not my favorite. His acting to me falls flat in virtually all his roles, especially here. He's not the only bad actor here but he's the worst of them. He's why this isn't a 5 banger. The good: The restore from 2010 looks fantastic The sets, effects, cinematography, costuming and grandeur undertaken here is outrageous. What hasn't been said!?! Also, what can't Vincent Price do!?! So let it be written. So let it be done.

Performances from faces and names I've known my whole life but never seen all together. It's a massive film that, honestly, didn't have a lot of fat to trim, all things considered. The performances are top notch (save Heston in my opinion). I've come to the conclusion that I think I'll watch any film with Anne Baxter in it.I don't think I need to mention the whiteness of this movie for the majority of speaking characters--in that regard, this movie doesn't sit well with modern eyes.My only wish for this film was that Charlton Heston had another expression other than "looking straight through your soul, uncertain of the future here in this mortal coil." Was that Moses' schtick or just Heston?

+ Insane that this movie was made in 1956. I have no idea how some of the VFX shots were pulled off. The snake staff + burning bush + tablet creation were amazing. + When I said something super dumb/frustrating as a kid, my mom would reply "Moses, Moses" in her best Nefretiri impression. Finally understand the reference lol. + Moses drops some absolute bangers. "A city is built of brick, Pharoah. The strong make many, the starving make few. The dead make none." *drops brick on scale*. Rameses annihilated 😎 + Everyone in 1500BC was hot AF?? + Production design and sets in combination with the on-location shots of Mount Sinai were awesome. + Blue screen shots were noticeably poor in 4K but they got the job done. I'm sure it was nuts back then. + The color is *gorgeous*. Props to everyone who restored this for 4K. + All the costumes 🤌🏻 + Moses' hair and beard post-burning bush 😍 + How about that massive orgy scene lol + Bumped up half a star since I'm still thinking about the movie.- Likely will never watch this again due to the length. Had to take 3 nights to finish. Keep this as the original cut, but need at least an hour trimmed off for a more palatable version IMO. - Overall, Heston works for me, but his and some of Baxter's delivery is incredibly forced. Convinced that Brad Pitt's character in Babylon is partially inspired by Heston's performance. - Dathan can kick rocks. Major scumbag. - The Hebrew people turn on Moses at the drop of a hat like 3-4 times. Dude just parted the Red Sea and saved all your lives, chill out guys.

Name a better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than 4 hours of Exodus.Seriously blown away by this though, couldn’t even fathom what I was seeing on screen at times. You’re telling me they actually used to use real people as extras instead of adding them in post?!
